Westlake Police Department is the only police agency in Greater Cleveland to have Community Service Officers (CSO) on staff. This part-time position was created in 1997 with one officer. Today, our five CSO officers wear uniforms and drive marked police cars, but do not make arrests or carry firearms. CSOs provide support to the Patrol Division, managing duties such as auto lockouts, child seat inspections, bailiff duty, and directing traffic at accidents or during power outages. CSOs handle many service calls that do not require the attention of a sworn officer, freeing up our patrol officers for other duties.
