Are You OKAY™? Senior Calling Service
Westlake Police Department works in conjunction with the Westlake Center for Community Services to manage the senior home check calling service "Are You Okay?" Participating senior citizens in the city receive a daily call to check on their welfare. If the call is not answered, the Police Department is notified and an officer is dispatched to the home to conduct a personal check-in visit.

Vigilance is a key component of neighborhood safety. Our department offers a Block Watch program that teaches residents how to effectively monitor their neighborhoods for any suspicious or illegal activities.

Westlake Police Department supports the Child Safety Fingerprinting Program. Our officers and trained civilian personnel provide child fingerprinting services at special events, schools, hospitals and other locations throughout Westlake as a free public service.
Several members of our department have completed necessary courses and are qualified to check the installation of child safety seats. An individual from any community may come to the Westlake Police Department to have his or her child's safety seat inspected. We continue to see an excellent response from the community for this free service, which has been promoted through NewsChannel 5's National Child Passenger Safety Week and the Operation ABC Mobilization (America Buckles Up Children).
Today, there is an increasing need for fingerprinting services, required now for licensing; for employment and volunteer positions at child care centers, parochial schools and organizations that deal with children, senior caregivers; and as a requirement to enter many post-graduate schools.
Several Westlake Police Department officers and civilian personnel are trained as part of the Civilian Fingerprint Program. Westlake residents, or any person working in or applying for a job in Westlake, may take advantage of our civilian fingerprinting service at no charge. However, the person being printed is required to provide proof of identity and supply his or her own fingerprint card.
The State of Ohio has also mandated that most fingerprints be submitted digitally through it’s WebCheck system. A list of firms and agencies offering WebCheck services may be found at this link:

Our department officers teach the skill of fingerprinting to Boy Scouts for their merit badge awards. (We also teach photography, first aid and CPR to local Boy Scout Troops.)
Westlake Police Department participates in a host of charitable community programs throughout the City, including the annual Coats for Kids Campaign, various food collection drives, and other special-needs collections. The department also gathers unwanted cell phones and turns them over to the Westlake Center for Community Services ; the phones are provided to our senior citizens for emergency use.
Speed Command Alert Trailer (SCAT)
To promote safe driving speeds, Westlake Police Department maintains two Speed Command Alert Trailers (SCAT), placing them along roadways throughout the city. The SCAT use radar technology to track the speed of an approaching vehicle and then flashes the speed at which the vehicle is traveling on its oversized monitor. Residents are encouraged to request the SCAT trailer be set up in areas where speed limit violations are frequent.
Westlake residents are encouraged to notify the Police Department when they will be away on vacations, so that uninhabited homes (for either short or long durations) can be watched. The police department assigns officers to visit homes on the Vacation House Watch to check that the residence is safe and secure. Residents are also encouraged to notify the department when a residence will be left unoccupied during a family funeral or wedding.
