Rumpke Waste and Recycling provides residential recycling and rubbish collection services for the City of Westlake.

Day of Collection
Recycling and rubbish materials will be picked up on the same day each week EXCEPT when a holiday falls on or before your regular pick up day. Then your recycling and rubbish materials will be collected one day later. Please place your rubbish and recycling at the tree lawn by 6 a.m. on your collection day, or preferably the night before, after 6 p.m. Make sure rubbish and recycling are on opposite sides of your driveway.

Do not place rubbish and recycling materials out sooner than 6 p.m. the night before your regular collection day. City code 951.01 prohibits this. All containers must be removed from the tree lawn no later than 24 hours after collection. Your trash bags and containers should be stored in a manner that they cannot be seen from the street.

New Year’s Day 1/1/16 - 1 day delay for Friday routes only
Memorial Day 5/30/16 – 1 day delay for all routes
Fourth of July 7/4/16 – 1 day delay for all routes
Labor Day 9/5/16 – 1 day delay for all routes
Thanksgiving Day 11/24/16 – 1 day delay for Thursday and Friday routes only
Christmas Day 12/25/16 – No delays

Rumpke does not observe MLK Day, President’s Day, Good Friday, Columbus Day nor Veteran’s Day.

Recycling

The City of Westlake provides each residence with an 18 gallon recycle bin. All recyclables can be mixed together in the single bin. You may also use your own container if it is clearly marked “Recycling”. Please do not use plastic bags. If you need a recycle bin, please call the Service Department at 440-835-6432, or you can pick one up from the Service Center at 741 Bassett Road.

Rubbish Rules & Regulations
Residents are responsible for providing their own trash bags and containers. Required containers: Plastic bags securely tied or metal or plastic containers with lids and lift handles. Maximum weight per bag or can is 50 pounds with a maximum container size of 32 gallons. Paper bags and cardboard boxes are not acceptable as containers and will not be collected. All trash must be drained, wrapped and placed in a waterproof container or tied bag. Neither the city nor Rumpke are responsible for damage to containers.
List of acceptable materials

Heavy and Bulky Refuse:
Rumpke will collect bulky household items on your regular trash day. Please call Rumpke 24 hours in advance to schedule a bulk item pick up at 1-800-828-8171.

The following items are examples of bulky items:

  • Carpeting: Rolled and tied in 4-foot sections, separated from padding
  • Pipes, poles, gutters and downspouts, etc. – cut into 4 foot sections
  • Tables, basketball poles, swing sets, etc. - must be dismantled and cut into 4 foot sections
  • Refrigerators and freezers – emptied and doors removed (City Code 521.01)
  • Furniture
  • Tires and appliances containing Freon will be collected by a separate truck
  • Wooden materials such as wooden boxes, crates, lumber, plywood, etc. must be collapsed, cut, tied & bundled with wire, twine or rope. Bundles must not be more than 1 foot by 4 foot with all nails bent down, flattened or removed and must not weigh more than 50 pounds.
  • Rumpke will not take the following items: household hazardous waste, medical waste, large amounts of roofing or construction debris, automotive parts, stable matter, dead animals weighing more than 10 pounds, pool chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, or any item deemed “hazardous” by Federal or State law.

    Contractors are responsible for removing all building and construction materials.

    Yard Waste
    Must be placed in regular refuse cans, paper, or plastic bags. These materials will be collected with your regular rubbish. NOTE: Contractors are responsible for the removal of yard waste.

    Examples of Yard Waste: grass clippings, ornamental grasses, flowers, plants, leaves, weeds. Reminder: ornamental grasses must be tied, bundled and placed next to rubbish for collection.

    Brush
    The Westlake Service Department will only pick up branches and tree limbs under the following conditions:

      Size limitation:
      4'x 2' bundles, maximum spread of 2 feet, maximum 50 lbs.
      Larger size branches, limbs or logs, 3" or more in diameter, must be cut into shorter lengths, stacked in a pile and not exceeding 50 lbs.
      Single branches must not exceed 4 feet in length.

      Where:
      Placed on tree-lawn, bundles parallel to curb, ends in same direction, separated away from rubbish and recycling.

      When:
      Place on tree lawn by 6 a.m. on your regular scheduled collection day. Collection may be delayed depending on volume of brush to be collected or weather conditions. Examples of brush: tree limbs, branches, bush clippings, firewood

      Miscellaneous:
      All thorns and/or pricker branches MUST be bundled.
      Remove all metal, wire, nails, roots and dirt.
      Do not mix any other rubbish, yard waste or other materials with the brush.
      Cans may be used if they contain brush only and separated away from rubbish and recycling.
      Maximum can weight of 50 lbs.
      Maximum container size of 32 gallon.

      Binding Materials:
      Bundles must be tied securely with a non-metallic binder such as rope, twine or nylon.
      BRUSH BUNDLED WITH WIRE, CORDS OR CABLE ETC. WILL NOT BE COLLECTED.

      NOTE: Contractors are responsible for the removal of all branches and shrubs.

      Christmas Tree Disposal
      All ornaments, lights, stands and other man-made decorations, as well as plastic tree bags, must be removed from Christmas trees before collection.Place your Christmas tree on the tree lawn next to your rubbish. The City of Westlake Brush truck will pick up.

      Helpful Hints
      - Place a name or address on cans, lids and bins.
      - Collection on any street may be any time after 6 a.m.
      - Streets do not have a specific time of collection.
      - Streets are collected one side at a time.
      - Collection times may vary due to volume, construction, time of year, weather, etc.
